The Hunt for WMMs

- Filed under: — Posted by: Oberon @ 3:03 pm

The Prez:

“Today because America has acted, and because America has led, the forces of terror and tyranny have suffered defeat after defeat, and America and the world are safer,” Bush told employees at Oak Ridge National Laboratory*, where components of Libya’s nuclear program are being stored.

“Although we have not found stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction, we were right to go into Iraq,” Bush said. “We removed a declared enemy of America who had the capability of producing weapons of mass murder and could have passed that capability to terrorists bent on acquiring them.”

Oh, so now it’s weapons of mass murder? Pass me the binoculars, I’m looking for the new goalposts.**

Either Bush just misspoke, or his speechwriters are cleverly trying to shift the terms of the debate. Of course Iraq had WMMs – guns, bombs, airplanes, you name it. Wanna dispute that one? I didn’t think so.

If nothing else, it sure beats “weapons of mass destruction program related activities.”

* Bush presumably picked Oak Ridge National Laboratory to remind people of his triumph in convincing Libya to stop its own WMD program. Angry Bear, however, catches what everyone else seems to have missed.

** Yes, “moving the goalposts” is a metaphor for making the standard of proof more difficult, not easier. I’m guilty of misusing the metaphor. Suggestions for a better metaphor requested.

    Ricky,

My single asterisk paragraph got auto-formatted into a bullet point. How do I prevent that?

Also, the old comments-scroll named the post which was being commented on. That was handy. Can you bring it back?

  2. Crank:

I could be wrong, but I think he’s used “weapons of mass murder” and “weapons of mass destruction” pretty much interchangeably since before the war.

  3. Cassidy:

Hell, Bush uses a lot of words in the English language interchangeably. :)

  4. Ricky:

Oberon, the asterisk is somewhate of a quick-tag within Wordpress. I have that activated so that we can put in things like smilies and a few others, without having to code them.
A fast way to disable something like that instance is to italicize the asterisk.

I’ll eventually add a “last 50 comments” link, so that everyone can have a fast resource for the latest happenings.

    Wordpress rules, btw.

  5. Ricky:

BTW, Oberon, go to your profile w/in the login setup and fill out your addy & you’ll get automatic e-mails when someone comments on one of your posts.

    Wordpress rules, pt. II.

  6. Dean:

Considering that I’ve repeatedly one into Lefties who’ve claimed that chemical weapons somehow aren’t part of the “Weapons of Mass Destruction” (esp. after the sarin round was found), I think WMM is a minor point.

And, yes, chemical weapons are considered a “weapon of mass destruction.” Certainly more so than assault weapons or John Edwards’ wife (a phrase recently used IN PRAISE in a newspaper article, btw).

  7. Andrew | BB:

John Edwards’ wife? Or John Kerry’s?

Aw, shit, who am I kidding – I don’t care.

I was fairly interested in the wordpress news, however.

Thanks for positng more Oberon Well, and Ricky and Jay G for that matter.
